2000-2001 Season

May 11, 2001 – Kokoro Dance performed at a benefit to raise money for dancer Michael Whitfield’s cancer therapy at the EDAM studio (303 E. 8th Avenue) at 6 PM. Kate Potter taught a yoga class prior to the performance. From 8 PM on, everyone moved to The Brickhouse (730 Main) for snacks, drinks and dancing. Over $6,000 was raised for Michael’s therapy. Thanks to all who contributed.


Powell Street Festival Benefit

Kokoro Dance performed at 8 PM on May 18, 2001 at the Roundhouse for a fund raising event for the Powell Street Festival.


PLAY IT AGAIN CONFERENCE 2001

Kokoro Dance performed and taught May 3-5, 2001 at the 2001 Play It Again Conference in Winnipeg. Jay Hirabayashi joins clown artist Gerardo Avila in performances and workshops.


April 20, 2001 7:30 PM – Kokoro Dance performed at the downtown BCIT campus for the Green Millennium Fashion Show, an eco-friendly fashion show for the Burns Bog Preservation Society.


Kokoro Dance performed and taught at the 3rd CanAsian Dance Festival in Toronto March 17th-24th, 2001.

The National Ballet of Canada’s Chan Hon Goh premiered a new solo work commissioned for her by the CanAsian Dance Festival choreographed by acclaimed dance artist Peter Chin. Denise Fujiwara also premiered a dance of postmodern mischief with an Asian aesthetic choreographed by Tedd Robinson.

Showcasing classical as well as contemporary work The CanAsian Dance Festival featured Kokoro Dance and partly based in Burlington, Ontario and Orissa, India the exquisite Odissi dancers Ellora and Devraj Patnaik. Visiting from Jakarta was classical Javanese dancer Maria Darmaningsih who performed with the musical group Gamelan Toronto.

Artists in residence Jay Hirabayashi (Kokoro Dance, Vancouver) and Maria Darmaningsih (soloist, Jakarta) taught workshops and master classes.


Kokoro Dance performed February 8, 2001 for Out on the Slopes Productions at the Whistler Convention Centre as part of Gay Ski Week in Whistler. Kevin Bergsman, Jay Hirabayashi, Naomi Lefebvre, Jennifer McKinley, and Janna-Jo Scheunhage danced two numbers on a sixty-four foot by eight foot fashion show runway before over one thousand people.


Kokoro Dance performed November 24, 2000 at the Commodore Ballroom for the sold-out M-A-C Fashion Cares fund raiser benefit for A Loving Spoonful, Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation and the St. James Community Service Society. Participating dancers were Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Salomé Diaz, Jay Hirabayashi, Jennifer McKinley, Jennifer Murray, Paulina Kee, Kristine Richmond, and Janna-Jo Scheunhage.


Kokoro Dance presented the Vancouver International Dance Festival 2000 at Performance Works and Pacific Cinematheque from October 22 to November 11, 2000. The festival featured films from the Tatsumi Hijikata Memorial Archives, fifteen performances and fifteen workshops in butoh dance. Participating artists were Kokoro Dance (Vancouver), Ziyian Kwan (Vancouver), Kohzensha Butoh Company (Japan), GooSayTen (Japan), SU-EN Butoh Company (Sweden), Tangentz Performance Group (Hawaii), Jocelyne Montpetit Danse (Montreal), and Fujiwara Dance Inventions (Toronto).

Kokoro Dance gave seven performances of X-ROADS with dancers Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Salomé Diaz, Sara Dorsey, Jay Hirabayashi, Stephen Jeong, Ziyian Kwan, Jerry Longboat, Jennifer McKinley, Jennifer Murray, Paulina Kee, Kristine Richmond, and Janna-Jo Scheunhage and musicians Chenoa Anderson (flute) and Parmela Attariwala (violin). Lighting design was by Gerald King, music by Robert J. Rosen, sound design by Susanne Clampett, and technical direction by Kelly Maloney.


Kokoro Dance performed on Saturday, October 14, 2000 at 1 PM for Earth Dance 2000 at Beatty St. Armory (620 Beatty St.) to the music of Q. The mission of EarthDance Vancouver is to create a sustainable local organization that utilizes the music and dance community as an engine to inspire and empower individuals toward progressive social change and compassionate global awareness, while raising funds for selected charities. Think globally, dance locally! Dancers Barbara Bourget, Jay Hirabayashi, Stephen Jeong, Paulina Kee, Jennifer McKinley, and Jennifer Murray took part in the performance.


Jay Hirabayashi performed at the opening of the National Nikkei Heritage Centre in Burnaby at 6 P.M. on Friday, September 22, 2000. Jay perform solo from 6:00 – 6:30 P.M. and then performed a duet with odori dancer Akemi Komori to music by koto player Teresa Kobayashi.


Kokoro Dance performed at the AIDS Walk 2000 at Stanley Park on Sunday, September 24, 2000. Dancers Jay Hirabayashi, Stephen Jeong, Jennifer McKinley, and Kristine Richmond performed for an estimated 7,000 walkers in support of a fund-raiser for people suffering from AIDS.


Kokoro Dance performed at Trout Lake (3350 Victoria Drive) at 2 PM on September 9, 2000 as part of the Collective Echoes public art project called “Watermark.” Dancers Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Jay Hirabayashi, Stephen Jeong, Jerry Longboat, Paulina Kee, Jennifer McKinley, Jennifer Murray, and Kristine Richmond took part in this blue-painted performance in the rain.


Kokoro Dance performed at the CBC TV Plaza at noon on September 1, 2000. Dancers Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Salomé Diaz, Jay Hirabayashi, Jerry Longboat, and Kristine Richmond created an evanescent dream on the concrete plaza.


Kokoro Dance performed Embryotrophic Cavatina at the annual Under the Volcano Festival in Cates Park, North Vancouver at 5 PM on the Festival Main Stage on August 13, 2000. Dancers Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Jay Hirabayashi, and Jennifer Murray received a standing ovation.

Kokoro Dance gave three workshops culminating in a participatory performance at the Western Naturist Gathering at the Lupin Naturist Club near Los Gatos, California between July 20-22, 2000 as well as performing on Bonny Doon Beach. Dancers Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Jay Hirabayashi, and Jennifer Murray participated.


Kokoro Dance taught a master workshop and performed at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Gardens for the San Francisco Butoh Festival. The performance took place at 1 P.M. on July 29. Dancers Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Sara Dorsey, Jay Hirabayashi, and Jennifer Murray participated.


Kokoro Dance with dancers Kevin Bergsma, Barbara Bourget, Salomé Diaz, Sara Dorsey, Jay Hirabayashi, Stephen Jeong, Jennifer McKinley, Jennifer Murray, Kristine Richmond, and George Rosenberg performed its 5th annual Wreck Beach Butoh at Tower Beach (below the UBC Museum of Anthropology at the foot of the #4 Trail) at 11 A.M. on Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2, 2000.
